Impact

Abundant, zero-carbon energy from nuclear fusion will revolutionize our world.

Fusion in the Sun is responsible for solar energy on earth and all major energy sources: sunlight enabled life on earth, creating fossil fuels; solar heat permits our water cycle, creating hydroelectricity, and non-uniform heating is responsible for the wind. Instead of harvesting these tiny secondary effects, we strive to reproduce their primary source.

This is obviously challenging here on earth, where higher temperatures and density are required to compensate for the smaller volumes.

This is why we say we’re building a super-star on earth.

Every step of our process creates valuable products.

The neutrons produced in fusion reactions have valuable applications today.

They treat fission waste and create scarce medical isotopes.

Scaled up or improved systems will produce more neutrons, and net heat (fusion gain Q>1). A further increase in Q will pave the way to decarbonizing industrial processes and maritime transport.

Even higher values of Q will unlock net electricity and combined applications of heat and electricity such as green hydrogen and the retrofit and upcycle of coal, gas and nuclear power-plants.

That will mark the beginning of a new era of safe, clean power with no proliferation, meltdowns or fission waste.

Fusion will generate enough energy for a person’s lifetime with just a bathtub of seawater and the lithium found in two laptop batteries. Abundant, cheap electricity could scale up water desalination, carbon capture and sequestration on a planetary level.

In our vision, the root enabler of this value chain and related spin-offs are our incredible HTS magnets.
